55 Gallon .... (Major Overhaul)

Ok so I might be close to getting the wife into caving in on letting me bring up the 55 Gallon Tank from the basement.... thing is... its got ALL kinds of old salt in it from the last person to use it. Salt Stains / Crystalized Salt... like a massive Salt Buildup! ... whats easiest way to clean it up? considering its 55 Gallons and not exactly gonna be easy to lug around...

Alos maybe some recommendations for it? should I go with 2 filters and rotate the media? when changed? or one filter? ... also I have hoods BUT no lights.. so I'll have to find some pretty cheap light strips...

Thanks David

I've heard some people mention that vinegar will help with salt stains. As far as you filtration is concerned, keep in mind the flow rate and the strength of the current. Can your fish you plan to add handle a strong current? I'd try to find at least one filter that pumps 500gph if not more. Do you know if you want a hang on back (HOB) or a canister, trickle down?

Hello Dehvid
Salt or hard water buildup can be a pain to clean and look really bad, but once you use some hot water and bleach and a good scrub brush, it should come off ok as long as its a glass tank.
I use two filters on my 55 and only clean out one filter media at a time, leaving the other intact. I hardly ever need to change out the filter media, just a good rinse in a bucket of used tank water during a water change works.
BigAls has some great prices for hood lights and I believe they are on sale right now. You should take a peek at their online store for prices.
Best of luck with your new tank!
