Getting a tank divider

I think this is where I need to post this...

But I want to get a tank divider for my 10g, but I'm not too sure how to do this. It would be for a betta on one side and my other little fish on the other. Anyone know how a tank divider works? Like do I need another filter? Or what? Totally clueless so fill me in!

You can get a tank divider from the LFS for around $10. A lot of Fishlore members have suggested using silicone on the sides of the tank to make sure the divider does not move. The divider should allow for water movement on both sides. It has holes.

What is your other fish? You will need to make sure that it is compatible with the betta's environment. For example, a goldfish would need a lot colder water, and a puffer would need brackish. Bettas need tropical warm environment.

Read up on Betta care in this article. This will tell you the care involved and you can make a decision about your other fish.

Hope that helps!

i'd definitely suggest siliconing the divider to the tank like hkirchen said, quite a few people have been having issues recently with bettas breaking through dividers and attacking other fish

ive had mine many many months and if cut properly, you shouldnt have any fitting thru or digging under with proper subtrate...although I do keep my water levels 2 inches below the top of the divider

Okay. I'm going to see if I can get one. Do I need to worry about the betta being able to see through the divider? And what exactly do you meaan by siliconing it?

basically taking the part that will be pressed against the inside of the tank walls, adding some silicone to it (same as the sealant used to keep the seams of the tank together) and basically gluing the divider to the tank so that they can't push it away from the sides.

hopefully that made sense

as far as your bettas being able to see through, you can put lots of plants against the divider but if you look at the picture that shawnie posted as long as the divider is colored and not clear they shouldn't be able to see through it very well

Okay. that makes sense. So would I need to take out some water from the tank to silicone it? And where would i get silicone?

yeah the tank would need to be dry in order to silicone the whole side of the divider and you'd need to be able to let it sit dry for at least 24 hours so that the silicone can dry, but putting some just at the top would probably work too. you can get aquarium silicone at pretty much any LFS, i'm positive that they carry it at all pet and petsmart, i've seen it there bfore
