new tank setup

I am setting up new 75 gal tank for plants and fish
I am considering either using a substate heater or a reverse under gravel filter.
does anyone have experience with either of these ?

I don't have any experience . . . have you tried a pet store or a breeder?

welcome to fishlore!!!UGF'S for bigger tanks are harder to keep clean and keep all the waste out from under it...for the bigger tanks, I think cannister filters are the best...im not sure what a substate heater is tho ...hopefully another member will know

You mean the heating cords that you run under the gravel/sand?
I know that plants love them but I think that there's a specific way you need to set them up. Other then that you'll need a regular heater as well b/c it won't beable to heat the whole tank itself.

UGF for 75 gal

Hi Tommy I have never used a UGF but I have heard alot of bag things about them on bug tanks... I have a 75 g freshwater and I use 2 cannester filters a rena sp2 and a fluval 205 and change them on a 2 month cycle...one every 4 weeks so you wont shock your cycle in the tank...I found it is always better to over filter then not enough...Hope this helps and it is only my opinon on filters...Rob

a reverse undergravel filter is actually helpful, BUT you need a main filter like a HOB or a canister or something. the reverse UGF will push waste out from underneath the gravel. i don't know about the heater though
