Tank temp + cooling!!!

hi guys,
just wondering how hot is too hot for my tank? it has tetras, khuli loach and a bristle nosed catfish if that helps. also how would i go about cooling my tank? at the moment i don't let it get above 26-27 degrees c, and i do that by putting ice blocks in the top of my filter tray, im not sure if that actually works, but i thought it might. any ideas?
cheers

Hey, i know about some of the heats we are getting lol, you could put ice cubes in a plastic bag and float it, its better then nothing you don't want to drop them in without a bag as the water that melts wont be treated. as for temperature the fishlore website has most fish temperature ranges. I keep my fish heater set at 24C or 75F this is during the summer as with the heat it boosts up to about 26-30 anything above the ice packs come out, if you can avoid the tank from getting direct sunlight and put the aircon on maybe this will aid in keeping the water temp down.

ohhh yer tell me about it. its going to be 4 days over 40 down here. ouch! the ice blocks that i used were made with treated water. will that still be ok? and i usually try and run my tank at about 22-24 but you said yours goes upto 30? 30 degrees? i thought that was way too hot. so i shouldn't be too scared about letting the temp rise up a little bit more. because i was pulling out the ice at about 26-27.

the less fluctuations the better the only reason i pull them out at 30 is because my tank is outdoors its very difficult to maintain a stable temperature, on cooler days my tank is set up 26. but what your doing is correct you want to minimize the temp fluctuations as even 1-2deg either way can stress the fish.

out of curiosity when you say treated are you mixing the water conditioner then freezing it? still might be a better idea to put them in a bag and peg it on top, also more ice together in one spot may last longer.

yes i made up a litre of water with conditioner and mixed it up, then put it in an ice tray. yer i think i will go with the bag idea. that way its not constantly adding more water to the tank, and i can just keep refreezing it. thanks again

With warmer temps it helps to increase aeration due to less oxegyn in warmer water.

If you put treated ice cubes in a tank and a fish pecks at it, will it's little fishy lips stick to it?

on another side note, fish love the bubbles from air stones/bubble wands anyways! at least my corycats and bettas do!

Have used 2 liter Soda bottles w/ limited success since results depends on room temp and how often I can replace. Bigger chunks may not drop temp as fast as cubes (less surface area on bottle than cubes) thus slower drop but may last longer which is bette than fast drop.
Use these bottles to keep fish alive along w/ battery air pump when transporting fish from beach to home. Worked great even keeping tempermental fish such as Snappers (baby Bluefish). trying to keep them alive at home is another story!!
Just becareful around the glass tank. Fz soda bottle can you know what I mean!!!
