Me again with new tank ;-)

I have decided because I would want to soon anyway to upgrade more then I expected. I am getting a 55 gal tank, My filter I have now is only good for a 40 Gallon tank. Is the best way to set up the new tank to use the old and new filter, so I will not have to cycle again?

And if so how long should I use both?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Yes, the old one is running right now. I am going to the store now to purchase the new furniture and tank.

Thanks for the reply.

How exciting!

If you're using the filter floss from your old tank and it had fish in it and was cycled, you can add new fish right away to the new tank using the old filter floss.

If you wait to add fish, you'll likely lose the cycle.

Yes, my current tank has fish that I am transferring to the new tank.

I will use both filters like mentioned for a couple of weeks so that the bacteria can build up in the new one, then just use the new beefy one, unless I should just keep both going?

My current filter is a Fluval 205(up to 40G), my new one will be Rena Filstar xP2(up to 75G).

From what Barbrella said, I should be able to add new fish right away to the new tank? Even though I am adding 25 more gallons of water?, or does that still not matter because I am using the already cycled filter?

Sorry if I am being a pain!

Yes transfer your fish from the old to the new as soon as you move the filter over to new tank. Remeber to run the new tank for a day or so to make sure everything is working right and temp is stable before doing the transfer. Id also tranfer as many of the decoration as you can over too. This should prevent a mini-cycle from happening in the new tank after the transfer.

side note: You could leave both filter on the tank as long as you want too. That way you always have that filter for the old tank ready to go if you ever need it for the old tank again. Never know you might have an itch to have more than one tank going.
