An overflow box allows water to leave the tank and drain into a sump for those of us who don't have predrilled tanks. The sump is a tank of water put inside the tank stand that simply adds water volume to the entire setup. It is also a convenient way to hide the heater and other equipment such as a skimmer and refugium for saltwater tanks. there are several topics on them as well as DIY posts on how to build them yourself, instead of forking out $100's on ones that don't maximize the space.
