Top rim of tank not attached. Should I do something?

I recently bought a used 10 gal tank which I plan to keep a betta and a few corries in. When my mom went to clean it (it was pretty dirty. Lots of calcium stains on the hood), she noticed the top rim wasn't attached and cut herself pretty bad on the glass. The rim sits in place but will this be a problem? Should I glue it or buy something to hold it down?

I wouldn't worry about it really, not on that size tank at least. I've taken the rim off a 5.5gal before on purpose. The only purpose of the top rim is to hold a hood and to re-enforce the silicone seams of the tank. Theres always a possibiliy of the seams coming apart if the rim is gone or not working properly....its up to you if you want to take the risk. If you don't want to risk it, silicone it back on.

On some smaller tanks the rim isnt attached but if it is a problem...and cutting yourself badly IS a problem...then you can get some aquarium silicone...clean the edges of the glass and the inside groove on the rim well and then clean with rubbing alcohol to make sure there is no oil or grease of any sort on it...squeeze the silicone into the groove and put on the tank ...press down firmly to make sure it in on firmly...clean off any excess right away . ( try not to put to much in or it will be messy). Do not lift by the top rim as you may rip it back off again...good luck.

Thanks guys!! From what you've both said, it sound like I can just keep the rim on but don't necessarily need to seal it in place since the main function is just as support for the seams. Am I right in thinking this?

I won't be moving it from its location after it's set up.

Thanks Fishies-for-me for telling me how to go about siliconing it back.
