Measure in inches and do the following:

1. Length X Width X Height = answer

2. Answer divided by 231

3. Round answer to nearest whole number

I use this. Put in the dimensions then get the liters then use the liters to find the gallons.

Is that still accurate for a hexagonal tank?

Personally, hexs are only good for saltwater. I find it very hard to look in a hex.

Measure the length, width and height and use a conversion chart.

Here's the link for the Fish Lore conversion chart, scroll down to the bottom.

I'm sorry I missed the whole hex thing!

Ummm, put it in bathtub and start filling it with measuring cups? I wouldn't do this if it's very large.
It would work for a 5g and under though.

Maybe if you measured around it, the height and width across the top, someone may have the same size as you and know how many gallons it is.

In the end the LxWxH is the same as area of the bottomxHeight.

For Hexagonal tanks, just do the math as follows: measure one side lenght and write it down as measure A, then measure the widht from one side midpoint to the opposite side midpoint, write it down as measure B.

Now use this formulae to calculate surface area 6x(0.5x((A)x(0.5xB))). In other words, multiply B by 0.5 (divide it by two), multiply that value by A, then multiply that value by 0.5 (divide it by two), then multipy by 6.

Now you have the surface area, multiply that by the height of your tank. Divide that number by 231, round to the next number and you got the results in US gallons.

Sounds accurate to me.

If all else fails put it in your bathtub and get a gallon jug, and a 5 gall bucket and see how much fits
