Used 30 gallons & lots of questions.

Hey Everyone!

Many of you know I picked up a 20 gallon long tank with screen lid a while back, but after pricing lids, I decided to keep my eyes open for something else.

Well, I think I got a pretty good deal on a 30 gallon tank.
(30" long, 12" wide, 19" high) for $35.00.
It came with a lid & light, stand, filter, extra cartridges, gravel, decorative large rocks, air-stone, tubing, 2 heaters, a net and some plastic plants.

Here are my questions:

Filter:
It is a Whisper 30 (the guy I bought it from said it was a 30-60 but it just says 30 on the top, is that the same thing?).
It has black Bio-foam. I'm going to boil this or should I just replace it?
He provided me with ready to use filter cartridges made for a Penguin 110/125 filter.
Is it missing anything, media wise?

Will this be enough filtration for this tank?
I will be taking it slow, after a fish-less cycle I will only add my 4 neons and 4 serpae until I do more stocking research.

Heaters:

They are not submersible and both made of glass and the wattage is unknown. 1 is a Fritz PCB, the other is a Penn-Plax Therma-Flow.
I plan to use one or both of these to cycle and replace them with a Visi-Therm Stealth.
Should I get the 100 watt which is recommended by the manufacturer for up to 30 gallons or should I go higher...a 150 or 200 watt?

Good deal or not?

If this was confusing, please forgive me and ask any questions you might have.

Any and all advise, opinions and input will be greatly appreciated.

The 30-60 is a stronger filter than the 30 and has 2 sides for filter media. You could use the filter sponge it came with or buy a larger or thicker sponge maybe. I'd get: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...31&c=3578+4150 and cut it to fit. You can reuse it for ages and one package will make enough to probably last you the life of that filter and then some. I think the 30 is do-able for filtration, but if it were our tank, I'd add a 2nd filter - probably a penquin biowheel, like the 150 or 200: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...0&pcatid=12320

I'd go with at least 125 watts for the heater. 150-200 watts would be good.

It's a good deal.
