gravel - hardware store vs pet store

is there any reason why i cant use pea gravel from the hardware store? it is SO MUCH CHEAPER!! i realize i will have to wash it a lot more then aquarium stone, you can see through the bag its filthy.

also, they had bags of lava rock for landscaping. looked really cool. can you use lava rock for a substrate?

I have pea gravel in one of my tanks. I agree, way cheaper and looks really natural. I think it was about 3 bucks for a 50lb bag.
Make sure you rinse it really well like you said.

I use pea gravel and I love the natural colors and the fact that is was 3.49 for a 50lb bag.

Yes you can coffeebean.

And last time I looked around, last summer sometime, the garden shop at Main and Chief Peguis was about the cheapest. He had some pea gravel all bagged up and ready to go in 40-50lbs bags for around $3. All places should be close in price that is just the one I happened to stop in at. Like already said clean it real well.

i picked up some at rona, as i happened to be near one. it was 6 bucks for this HUGE bag. man, wish i thought of this for the 55 gallon. DOH! i feel like a bit of a moron.
i rinsed it well, needed more then pebbles from the pet store but having done flourite for the 55, this was nothing in comparison. i LOVE the way it looks.
