How to properly vacuum small substrate?

How do I clean eco-complete without vacuuming up the substrate?

in my african tank, I just skim the surface lightly...I dont do a deep gravel vac as that will stir it all up ...I feed mostly floating food so I dont get a ton of waste that goes below...works for me so far

There is specific sand vaccums at my LFS. Maybe you could find one?

I bought some air line tubing for another purpose, but it turned out to be too flexible. For this application, I took a metal hanger (they are not used properly at my house) and straightened it out. Then took some fishing line and made several knots. Just start the siphon and suck out the bad stuff.

I use it on my 27g. If you have a really small tank (I'm guessing for your 10g), just modify the amount of hanger/line you are using.

It might not be the smartest thing using the metal hanger as elements might leech out over a period of time, but it works good for me.

Below are pictures and the end result. Notice the small amount of sand, this was only because I jerked a couple of times and hit the sand, the waste will be sucked up without disturbing the substrate and you will lose a lot less water than with a standard siphon (if it is not time for a WC). I usually stay about .25 - .50 cm away from the substrate, just depends.

Your welcome! Just make sure not to tie the line (you can use string, thread, etc) too tight as it will restrict the flow.
