Strange growth on the gravel

Hi Folks,

New to the site and in need of some assistance. For the past 6 weeks or so I have had a strange growth on the gravel in my tank (100x40x40 cms). Have checked water and nitrites, pH, ammonia levels etc. all ok:

pH 6.0
nitrite 0ppm
Ammonia 0ppm
nitrate ? don't know - kit I have doesn't measure it

- and fish (5 gouramis, 2 neons, 1 rummy nose, 1 angel) all fine as well.
Planted - but newer plants not doing well
lighting - 2xFY30 tubes - 36" on timer - on 4.00pm off 11.30pm
filter cleaning - once per week - under tap - it's a fluval 30 interior filter - all has worked well for past 6 years

Photos can be seen here

Although the growth looks greenish in the photos, that's just the rendering of the image...it's actually white.

Only chemicals added are treatments when required, and tap safe during water changes...but very careful to measure right amount.

Have tried treating it like a fungus, but has not cleared. Water changes and even removing top level of gravel has had no effect.

Am thinking that I may need to completely clear the tank and start again?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Is it Sticky?

Hi Joy,

No, not sticky....when rolled between fingers it is fibrous and easliky clags together.

Have you vacuumed the gravel and tried to remove it that way? Maybe your gravel just needs a really good vacuuming. Let us know if you find out what that is. I don't think I would go to the extreme of clearing the tank and starting again just keep trying a few things until you get the right answer. We don't always get it right the first time that is for sure. That is exactly why I come here to see if others have experienced the same things I have. Good luck to you.

Possible solution

Just got back from talking to owner of local fish shop...he's been keeping fish for over 20 years...suggests it may be growth from uneaten food lying on the gravel...advised a really good vacuuming over the next few weeks...have made a start. Will let you know if it clears up.

Things looking good...really good vacuuming over past few weeks seems to be doing the job...I guess the answer is to keep on top of things and stop being so lazy
