Can i use wire mesh in my fish tank/will it be safe to leave in there?

Hello
okay, i have tropical fish - 4 in total, 2 oscar's and two unknowen because i've forgotten! But i can go to the shop to find out.
Basically i started 2 fish off in the tank, one was more aggressive than the other, (i was told if one is more aggressive to introduce more fish.)

So i did, the two oscar's, there only very small - as are the other fish.

Unfortunately the two oscar's have been picked on and have visable signs of shredded fins etc from being harrassed.
I've now separated the naughty one from the other 3 fish in a net. i don't have another tank and think its being cruel leaving the bully in the net!

So i want to know: Question/ Can i use wire mesh in the tank and will it be safe to leave in there? as i want to divide the tank!

Regards

welcome to fishlore oscar25!!

No its not ok as the fish will severely hurt themselves on it and it will rust.... if you cant get a professional divider, id return the bully ....oscars need large tanks of 100 gal when you have 2 ...so we deffinately need to find out the size of your tank ...measure the LENGTH times the WIDTH time the DEPTH and that will give you the gallon size ...finding out what the other fish will be good so we can figure out why they are picking on the others....heres a link also thats very important part of fish keeping

its about the nitrogen cycle that your tank needs to go through http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

They make tank dividers, but they may be too flimsy for oscars.

Honestly, sounds like you are over stocked anyway. I would try and take the oscars back to the pet store and get credit.

Probably not good to have wire mesh in the tank, unless it was specifically made for aquarium use and coated with something to protect the water and fish. Most wire mesh is plain steel, not the stainless variety. Even if it were stainless steel mesh, it would still rust a little eventually.

I definitely agree with the other replying posts, go with a divider made for aquariums.
