Learn from my mistake.

Today my husband and I decided to add sand to one of our ten gallon freshwater tanks. There was perhaps a pound/2.2 kilograms of mixed gravel already in the tank, so I suggested we use our largest fish net and scoop the gravel up - put the washed sand in - sprinkle the gravel on top of the sand. It would have been a great idea if we had removed the fish first. Because I didn't think of this one of our fish is now dead and M. I. A.

I was pulling the net towards the front of the tank and noticed a the fish with his head buried in the gravel, his tail was wiggling. I moved the net backwards, he swam out.

Finished taking the gravel out. Added the sand. Put the gravel back in.

It has been several hours and we still haven't see the little guy.

I killed my fish.

If you do anything to your substrate, please take your fish out first so that they don't get stunned, hit, crushed, killed, or possibly buried alive.

I feel badly. Hopefully the little guy had a head injury and died before I must have buried him alive.

I'm so sorry that happened. Thanks for the warning.
We not only learn from each other's successes but also from our mistake.

I'm sorry to hear that. Mistakes happen. The important part is recognizing it and learning from it. It is very admirable to be willing to share the experience with others so they can learn as well.

I'm so sorry, that must be awful. Have you found him yet? If not you should probably search, because it would be bad to have him rotting away in the gravel. I'm not trying to seem un-sensitive to your loss, but its probably a good idea...

I'm so sorry, but thanks for the warning. In the future when I move the decor and have to drag up some gravel, I'll remove my fish.

He has not shown himself. I am allergic to my tanks, apparently, so my husband will have to be a one man search party when he gets home. We have been doing PWCs every few days anyway because of algae (natural sunlight across the room).

So......
