| Learn from my mistake. Today my husband and I decided to add sand to one of our ten gallon freshwater tanks. There was perhaps a pound/2.2 kilograms of mixed gravel already in the tank, so I suggested we use our largest fish net and scoop the gravel up - put the washed sand in - sprinkle the gravel on top of the sand. It would have been a great idea if we had removed the fish first. Because I didn't think of this one of our fish is now dead and M. I. A.
I was pulling the net towards the front of the tank and noticed a the fish with his head buried in the gravel, his tail was wiggling. I moved the net backwards, he swam out.
Finished taking the gravel out. Added the sand. Put the gravel back in.
It has been several hours and we still haven't see the little guy.
I killed my fish. If you do anything to your substrate, please take your fish out first so that they don't get stunned, hit, crushed, killed, or possibly buried alive.
I feel badly. Hopefully the little guy had a head injury and died before I must have buried him alive. |
