Sand: The Basics

I want to start using sand in my aquarium because of how beneficial it is. Is there a speciefic type I should use thats commonly availble? Should I have a pea gravel base? Tell me everything

Pool filter sand is the way to go. The grains are rounded, you don't have to rinse it and it doesn't compact into a hard layer. Like all sand you either have to stir it manually occasionally or have something that will keep it stirred. Dojo loaches, Malaysian Trumpet Snails are two suggestions. I have Malaysian Trumpet Snails in mine because the go down in the sand during the day and come out at night.

So, I'd want something that burrows? Will Kuhlis work?

My kuhlis love my sand but mine don't really burrow they just stir the top layer. since the water doesn't circulate through the sand like gravel anerobic pockets of gas(now don't get scared) can build up if the sand isn't disturbed deeply enough. Dojos and Horsehead loaches both bury themselves completely in a sand tank so they are perfect.

i dont think my LFS carries any of those, but I know a friend who can special order them for me. But in case that doesnt happen, what are all the possibilities? That arent snails...

You could stick your hand(or a straw or something like that) in the tank and stick your fingers down in it every few inches about twice a week

Nearly every fish store stocks malaysian trumpet snails (though most don't sell them), as they hitchhike on other things. All it takes is one to populate a tank, as they breed asexually. If you see them in a fish store tank (they're the conical snails), you could probably convince an employee to include a couple.

OK, I just went to my local petsmart (yay...) and they just got a new stock of Black Kuhli's, Albino Dojos, and Peakock Eels. Perfect for me. I chose the Black Kuhlis. I asked the same question there and the lady had to remove almost all of the gravel to show them to me. I think I'm gonna go with the Black Kuhlis
