plants&sand

Is sand ok for a planted tank? I've heard it can can clog pours in their roots. Could I mixe it w/ gravel to keep the planted, or maybe us those little weights used to keep plants from floating?

I have some water wysteria growing in a 50/50 mix of sand and fluorite, and have had absolutely no problems with it. I know that others have used sand in their planted tanks, as well.

I have plants growing in sand although they do grow slower because sand is inert and adds nothing as far as food or minerals. I use more plants that grow on wood and rocks in the big sand tank.

i have plants in a tank with sand, and there's no issues. if you decide to mix with gravel, they'll tend to separate out over time because of the size differences. just something to think about

if you bury the roots well, they should stay down without a weight, but you might need a weight initially until the roots grow into the sand.
