I have both in my betta tanks. Sand works best with MTS they dig down in it and keep it turned over. I have never had a problem with bettas eating sand but when you add water make sure it doesn't make a cloud of sand because it is hard on their gills, this goes for any tank that has fish. If you are growing plants you might consider aqua soil. I picked up a bag of it and it seems to be a lot easier to plant in than gravel and better than sand so far. It is a lot cheaper than fluorite.
