Sand and gravel

I was planning to do about half the tank sand and the other half gravel. I'm still debating whether I'm splitting it down the middle, or doing a little portion in the side and front with some sand. I was just wondering if the sand and gravel would mix together, or if they'd stay in place. And if they do mix together, how would I separate them? Would using plants as a separation in some places work, or would I need to use wood, plexiglass, or some other thing to keep them from mixing?

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

Need some type of separator otherwise they will mix over time and the sand will just be on the bottom and the gravel on top. Also, do you have and bottom feeding fish cause those will stir up the sand and make it drift over the barrier little by little.

Thanks for your help guys! I'm definitely doing the sand/gravel and I'm going to get a separator for them, so thanks for the advice. And yes, I am planning on some cories and kuhli loaches that will stir up and move the sand... but of course, I don't expect it to be perfect. Thanks again!

What are you using as a seperator/barrier? I too am doing a sand and gravel mix (haven't decided if I am going to put the sand entirely in the front to create a sandy beach effect or in the middle to create a sort of across the river effect) and I haven't decided whether I am going to use slate rock, plexi-glass, lace rocks or something else to create a division to ensure that the sand and gravel do not mix. Good luck and let us see it when it's done!
