Changing from rocks to sand

I want to change out my rocks and put in sand for my black kuli's have 2 want 1 more. How do I do this without hurting the other fish in the tank. 29gal. Also do you clean sand the same way you clean the rocks?

We put the sand or silica sand in a bucket and rinse it for awhile, until the water runs clear but I am sure how this would work with sand, like beach sand. You'd have to be very careful with sand.

I mean't pool filter sand read on here that that was the best to use. Want my loaches to be able to borrow and the gravel I have now is to big for them to get under.

General rule of thumb is 1 to 1.5 pounds per gallon.
