Adding
iodine to
FW shrimps is usually recommended. However it is easy to overdose with this element. I found that using a formulation that comes ready to dose into the tank works quite well for our FW crustaceans.
I want to report my success in improving the quality of life of my FW shrimps (native Yellow Nose, Cherry, native Ghost-like long arms) as I began using TetraCichlid (multivitamin + iodine). Since this is not a double-blind study or even a simple comparisson group study, I report it as it is, anecdotal (case study) findings.
Cherry Shrimps: I got nine adults in a 5.5gal tank. Added six more a few days later. I have different size juveniles, which suggests different hatching events. I am feeding them mostly with
spirulina based food.
Yellow Nose Shrimps: Two of my seven molted. I keep
detritus in the substrate for them to feed and add chomped Algae waffers for them.
Native Ghost-like Long Arm Shrimps: All 4 adults molted. Feeding mostly on Spirulina based food.
Update (November 21, 2009): Be careful not to overdose!
My native ghost-like long arm shrimps all died, I assume due to my mistake (unintentional overdose: used a 10gal dosage in likely a bit less of 4gals of water). I suspect iodine and/or B-complex as responsible.
All water parameters in check. I didn't use any fish food containing copper.
The Yellow Nose Shrimps as well as the Cherry Shrimps are doing great. Cherry Srhimp keep breeding in there.
