Zebra Mussels????

Okay, so I live in Canada, in a town that sites on one of the great lakes. And if your not sure what that means, well the great lakes here in Canada are filled with zebra mussels. Most fisherman are trying to kill them i guess...

but i was wondering, would they make good pets?
i was thinking about getting one or two and putting it in with possibly my tropical fish community tank with other freshwater fish...
Do you think that would work

Thx,
-R

I think zebra mussels are cold water, it might be fine if you had goldies or white cloud mountian minnows. They probably wouldn't do to well with tropical fish. I think they need fast current as I belive they are filter feeders too.

Zebra mussels are a scourge on our natural environment. THey are a European import that got to the Great Lakes via bilge or ballast water. They are prolific breeders and apparently there are no predators of the mussels in North America. Transporting them is illegal in much of the US and possibly in Canada as well. I would advise against them

Ewww I've read about those.

If you are going to bring home an invasive species be careful that you don't end up letting them find their way to any other water ways. They have been very destructive to the Great Lakes.

I just read info about them, man such pigs! and we can't/shouldn't eat them b/c they may carry pollutants... man what a waste. I bet we could control their population if they were edible.

We've got Northern Snakeheads taking over the Potomac river fishery, a stray aquarium plant destroying the Mediterranean and Zebra mussels running a muck in the Great Lakes.

With all of the safe, non-invasive variety available to us why do people continue to take such risks. I've met aquariasts here in Md. that openly lust after snakeheads in spite of the destruction that they're causing right in our own back yard. That's stupid beyond irresponsible.

Sticky of an invasive species list might be good if it hasn't been done already.
