amano's always so hyperactive?

i put three in my tank two hours ago and i swear they have not taken a rest yet. they seem to love dashing from one end of the tank to the other...stopping every few minutes to gobble up a snack and then continue their adventures. rest of the fish seem to find them ammusing so its no harm although i wonder if they ever slow down?

One of them may be a female "in heat." When the females are ready to breed, they produce a hormone that causes the males to go nuts in a manner that you described.

Just wondering: I noticed in your profile that you have a ton of shrimp with your puffers. How are they doing? I thought puffers ate inverts...

I have never had amano but i've had cherry and Glass shrimp. I have many glass shrimp now and I know that most of the time the first day or couple days after I just got them and put them in the tank they do that. They swim up and down the tank ,constantly andthen they call down and walk around and lightly swim about in a calm manner after a day or so and don't do that crazy swimming anymore, heh. Give them a little more and see if they calm down a bit, I'm sure they will.....

thanks. me as well i have cherry and crystals but never were so active. i am being conservative when i say hyperactive....its funny...now they discovered my powerhead is the quickest route to the other side of the tank and have started using it to travel at super high speed. its actually really fun to watch. quite entertaining.

actually until today he has never even looked twice at any of my shrimp. well i take that back...he did find some mild interest in them for a few minutes (my older crystals) but never bothered them. and my crystal shrimp were less than 1/2" when i put em in the tank, he was a hefty 1.5" round meatball.

he did get excited with the amano's i put in today and chased them a bit but i think it was all the movement they were displaying that got him excited. he never actually tried to attack any of them. he randomly likes to chase anything that gets cought in the filter outflow and shoots across the aquarium. i even witnesses the amano's actually run into him twice today and bounce off him. i think he was more surprised than they were.

all that being said i think he's a mild tempered dwarf....although he vigorously hunts and kills snails whenever he gets the chance. i have been warned by others to watch him closely. my gut feeling is that my alpha male gourami keeps his temper in check. the gourami is definately the king of the tank. if the puffer was the alpha fish things might be different? not sure. all i can say is that it has been working out very well. there is absolutelly no aggression from anyone.
