Invert reccomendations?

Okay, I'll confess, I'm really more of a bug girl. I have a soft spot for invertebrates. The main reason I got into this hobby was in the hope of one day (in the far, far future) running a reef tank with some nice bryozoans, polychaetes, and maybe some big fat Busycon snails! (I've since come to appreciate fish in their own right, too.)

Anyway. Right now I am sticking to fresh water tanks. The only inverts I ever find for non-BW setups are apple snails and ghost shrimp. I don't have anything against them persay, but I already have a big land snail collection, and ghost shrimp just never appealed to me much.

So what I'm asking is, are there any less-commonly-seen inverts you've kept and enjoyed in your FW tanks?

Bamboo shrimp are really interesting little inverts. They filter feed so you'll want a well established tank.

Red cherry shrimp are also cool little guys that will scour your substrate for leftover food as well as clean off algae. They are also prolific breeders, so you can start out with 12 and end up with 100.

You can look into crabs and crayfish but freshwater versions tend to be more aggressive and will eventually kill fish and other inverts you have in the tank with them. They are best kept in species only tanks in my opinion.

I like all of the shrimp of the caridina grouping. They're really neat shrimp.

The giant filter feeders like bamboo shrimp and giant African filter feeder are really neat, too.

I love my crayfish but yeah there suppose to be in species only tank. Mine is in my community tank with many fish and he has always been well behaved but that is just luck of the draw just like my puffers. Nature would tell us the puffers and crayfish would be at it nonstop but they don't bother each other or anyone else. Plus they both have a common goal of devouring snails like it is an eating contest. So my suggestion for a big invertebrate fan would be crayfish but you have to choose it's tank mates very, very wisely.
