The Ole Wal-Mart Special

My girlfriend and I stopped by a LFS about a month ago and thats where the fun started. I have always wanted a salt water aquarium and this just added to the madness. After about a weeks work of research I decided that salt water just was not in our budget and we should try out luck at fresh water just to make sure we really wanted to do this. I had a tank when I was younger so we used that as our starter tank. Its a 29 gallon wal-mart special. All we needed to purchase was a new filter and heater. Got a great deal on the filter; thank you petsmart rewards club. Enough about that, on to the good stuff.

Right now plant-wise we have some Anacruss and some Cobomba. Fish-wise just 5 Black Neon Tetras. In the future once we plan on adding 6 harlequin rasboras, 4 or 5 corys (do not know what species yet, maybe panda since the LFS has some very young ones), some type of goramari(suggestions would be appricated) and an ADF for the girlfriend. Lastly alot more plants.

Thanks for looking.

Welcome to Fishlore!
I take it your tank is fully cycled already?
Good luck with growing anacharis, I never had any luck with that plant at all.
Also, there has been some problems with dwarf gouramis & illness, so I'd steer away from them. As for the ADF, they prefer & thrive in their own species habitat.

Welcome to Fishlore! I think you have a big enough school of black neons, but I could be wrong. What about a honey gourami?

Nice tank, and welcome to Fish Lore!
Good luck with your plants, and I love neon tetras. I would have to have a whole mess of them.

Thanks for sharing!

Hey everyone I will post pics soon of the tank here soon for updates. Been so long since a new one. So far we have amassed 5 black neons, 6 Lambchop rasboras, 4 cory cats 2 of one kind and 2 of another, and one blue goramari. We had 4 casualities. One was a black neon. We have no idea what happened to it. Went to bed one night and woke up and it was gone. No carcass anywhere in the tank at all. Our conclusion was it jumped out of the tank and the el gato at it. The other 3 where the cory cats. I think we may had added to many fish to quickly or maybe to many. Or we may have cooked them cuz I had the temp set at 80F. I was reading online that they need at 78 so i turned it down. 2 of them died s 24 hours after introduction to thne tank and one survived for a few more days. But the other 2 from the first patch are heathly as horses. We just got the blue goramari this past weekend. Pics soon

did you put aquarium salt in the tank? that many casualties usually indicates water quality issues (tank not fully cycled maybe?) or the fish were sick when purchased

Sorry, the wording on this kind of confuses me -- was the tank from when you were younger and still going with fish at the time you wanted to start the 29g? And you used some seed material from that tank to start the 29g? Because it sounds to me like a tank from when you were "younger" would be out of commission by now, just from the wording, and it would be incapable of seeding anything. Or maybe you weren't talking about seed material at all...?

I re-read the OP and it looks like he is basically starting over new using an old tank he already had, it actually reminds me I had a 29 when i was younger also, stored it outside and mother nature got the best of it

Good luck!

But unfortunately, the discus won't be possible in this current tank. They will be way too stressed by the neons and othre smaller fish, plus, the tank is too small. Discus are also incredibly hard to keep alive, only experts should attempt to keep them.

Anacharis melted in my tank. I thought it was the high temp (80).

Ancaharis Does not like doses of liquid carbon, or having ceramic/ lead weights around the bottom, so it will melt if you have or use any of these,
pH levels affect this plant also.

not too sure about the temp thing as, some people on other sites have advised it grows in local ponds where they live, and aparently its very hot !!!

You'll probably never see it in your aquarium, but anacharis moves up and down in the water depending upon water temperature and light. In your tank you may see tiny bubbles of oxygen escaping from your anacharis leaves. In the wild, this product of photosynthesis causes anacharis to float (unless well rooted) on warm, sunny days and sink on cool, cloudy days.

Just wondering, do you know what kind of wood that is? It looks really nice in that tank.

So, any new fish yet?

Long over due update.

Well unfortunetally we had to get rid of the blue goramari. Two of the black neons died because of injuries caused by him and another had a big chunk taken out of his anus. He is healing very well by the way. We add some stress coat. On to today, we picked up two female german blue rams and two more black neons to fill the void. When I saw the rams I instantly feel in love. Their colors are amazing for a tropical fish and they neat mannerisms. I felt this was the best combo to go with because we do not want the fish to spawn and then become territorial because of their fry and two males will defend their own teritories. We also add a albino ADF if I forgot to mention in previous posts. It seems to get along fine in the tank with the others. Even more so after we got rid of the goramari. The corys are doing very well also. Funny thing was when i put the rams in one of the corys was trying to school with them for about half an hour. Hopefully will get pics up tomorrow night.
