New 20 Gallon

New 20 gallon tank about 4 weeks old. Right now the tank has 6 gold barbs, 1 botia kubotai, and 1 gibbiceps. The tank also has a sword plant, an anubias plant, moneywort, 2 banana plants, and a wisteria plant.

I like it! It looks "fun" and a great place for fish to live.

There's an image of the tank before I added most of the live plants. You can get a better image of all the hiding places. There are also close ups of the gibbiceps and the botia kubotai, they are very young.

Hello!

Nice tank.... The blue gravel is nice and bright! Is the gibbiceps the striped fish in the third picture? Pretty...

Robin,

The striped fish is not the gibbiceps. The striped fish is a botia kubotai (angelicus botia). The gibbiceps is the fish on the ruins, it's a type of pleco.

Welcome to Fishlore. Nice looking tank.
You do know that Gibberceps get very large don't you? Do you intend to get a bigger tank for it?

Yes I know, we have a 1 foot pleco also in another tank. There are other tanks here for him if he needs it but I also know that fish don't grow as large as they can in smaller tanks so if he stays around 8-10 inches he'll be ok.

The sailfin or gippiceps plecos get up to 18" in the proper conditions.

When fish are kept in smaller tanks than they need, they are stunted and very unhealthy. Their insides don't grow like they should and it's really a horrible way for them to live. It would be like us trying to live in a small bathroom. Yes, we would fit, but it's not the best environment. We need room to move. So do our fish.

He'd be best in at least a 55g aquarium, if not a 75g.

I hope this helps!

When we take responsiblity for a pet, it's up to us to provide everything that pet needs to thrive.
Stunting a fish's growth by keeping him in too small of a tank will not allow him to grow properly, thus effecting his quality of life and effecting his lifespan.

Don't worry he has a nice 70 gallon tank when he gets too big but right now he's an 1 1/2" and has a long time for that.
