Here's the best pics I've been able to take of my aquarium. It's only 1.5 gallon but the filter does 100 gallons and hour. The water's a little cloudy because I stirred up the gravel putting in the flower pots. The fish is a male betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) and was just put into the aquarium. The green is live Java Moss and minor algal growth on the sides of the tank. It's lit by a single 10Watt Compact Flourescent 6500 degree Kelvin lamp. The water will clear to near crystal in a few hours. There's also a single Ghost Shrimp in the tank, the second one died just tonight.

PS: OH! His name is Yuri. That's Japanese for "Ghost"

Tank looks great and a beautiful beta. It looks larger than a 1.5g. Does Yuri handle the current well with a filter that strong?
I'm really loving how it's turning out. I'm going to add Dwarf Hairgrass in the next couple of days and some Marimo balls in the near future. Next month I'll be adding a bio CO2 system with a diffuser I've ordered from Malaysia, a bag of Eco-Complete is way too much for me but it won't go to waste as I'm setting up another tank for my wonderful girlfriend, and probably a Corallife 6700K ColorMax bulb or maybe two. I'm also going to be adding 4 or 5 shrimp, HOPEFULLY Cherries but Ghosts if not. Amano's would be cool as well because they eat algae. The local shops are horrible though... their selection for planted tanks is next to nil. A couple shops have promise but the order sizes are too large to get the critters and plants and supplies that I want. BOW TO THE INTERNET!!!! hehehehe. I'm about to add the UPS guy to my family tree.
NO! The current was way too much for him. BUT! I made a diffuser from a .5L water bottle. I series of holes in the sides makes sure that there's no dead water while the majority swirls and pushes out to the sides. It works incredibly well. I got the idea from a youtube video I saw recently. I was going to install a dimmer switch on the cable (and may still for feeding times) to slow the pump, but now I still have the high turnover rate of the water but calm water with decent enough surface agitation to make sure there's great oxygenation. I'm really surprised at just how well the thing works. Dude had a great idea!

Just wondering but do you have a link for the video?

Nice tank. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it was a 5 gallon ?
What is the brand and model of the filter ? I would love to get one for my small tank. Ghost shrimp eat Algae and are a lot cheaper then Cherry shrimp. If Yuri eats them it will not cost you as much.

I was mistaken, it wasn't a video, it was a DIY project on Instuctables.com (I LOVE this site, I get lost on it for hours.) My diverter is different in that it's mostly submerged, open on the right AND left sides, has holes, and spiral grooves that reduce the current by twisting the water to use up the energy of the flow.

The HOB is a Marineland Penguin 100. I picked it up online for less than $20 shipped to my door. Unbelievable price for such and awesome little filter.
I had two Ghost Shrimp until I did the aquascaping and the addition of Yuri but one died. I don't know why... I must've hurt him when I was putting in the pots or something. I feel bad about it. I really like the little shrimpies... Crystal Shrimp would be cool also but I doubt I'll see them for sale if I can't find Cherries locally.
Yuri loves to rest on the very soft Java Moss... like it's his bed or couch or something. heh.
Ok, update on the micro tank. 1 Male Betta, 1 Ghost Shrimp, and now 1 Dwarf African Frog!!!! The addition of a potted group of Dwarf Hair Grass which arrived from the ebay seller almost entirely brown and yellow... this is after trimming out what I could of the dead and dying and a few days of intense light to help with photosynthesis. The water is now crystal clear. All the tiny bright green spots on the Java Moss are all new growth. Friday I'll be adding four tiny Red Headed Algae Shrimp. Ok, I can't find a listing for them online but I'm pretty sure they're what's called a Red Nose Shrimp, Pinocchio Shrimp, or Rudolph Shrimp.
This may seem like an overloaded system but it's really not. The Penguin 100 with bio wheel has an ENORMOUS capacity for bio filtration and is filtering the entirety of the tank more than once a minute. The Java Moss actively filters the water for all it's nutrients. The frog and betta take no O2 from the system. The shrimps are small and along with the frog, actively scavenge the bottom all day and night. Space is not an issue either as the shrimp are gregarious and will pretty much stay together. With the plants and pots there's plenty of real estate and hidey holes.
I must say that I'm terribly proud of this little tank. I also believe that it's really added to my quality of life. Having it right here, in front of my mouse pad, I always have this tiny vista of living beauty to calm my nerves.

Your betta is beautiful and I love what you did with the tank. It really is calming to sit and watch our finned friends.
However, I have to mention 1.5 isn't really big enough for a betta, he should really have at the very least 2.5g.
I love ADF's, I have 2 myself, they're very entertaining, however, he should also have at least 2.5g's. He should be able to stretch his little flippers and have some horizontal swim room.
Be careful when feeding them, bettas are little piggies and may get to all the food quicker than your frog can find his.
