Second, I hate you.
Third, No really I hate you.
Fourth, why did you end up going with the d60 over the d40x and otehrs you looked at? Any specific things you liked more about it than the others?
Fifth, can I be rude and ask how much you went in on it for? There are a few sites I have seen with used d60's but I'm trying to figure out what the differences between them and the d40x are. it hasn't seemed like much to me, but I'm a total newb still! I'm price shopping still and plan to order mine next week.
btw congrats on the cam. For out of the box and firing away, those puffs look ridiculously good, the pics of the puffs that is. I'm so jealous right now |

Well, I haven't seen the D40x anywhere actually. Well, since all you'd have to do is look at Inkley's website, sure I'll tell ya. It was $699 for the body, 2 lenses, carrying case, 2 instructional DVDs, plus all the stuff that comes with the camera and lens (like covers and such). Of course it would have been cheaper if I hadn't gotten the lenses in VR, but I wanted that, and it was worth the extra $ to me. I ended up choosing the D60 over D40 just because I wanted the one with more mps and more features... I thought it'd probably take longer for me to grow out of it. And since I now plan on majoring in art and at least taking some photography classes in school I wanted something I was confident I'd like for a long time. I was drooling over the D90, but at $999 for just the body....... yeah, can't afford that. lol
And thanks everyone for the compliments on my fishy babies |

| AH ok. The lens I am looking at is VR also, but my budget is 500 so the d60 + 2 lenses would be out of my price range anyhow. What features did the d60 have over the d40 that won it over for you?
The d40x is 10.0 effective mp I think and the d60 is 10.2, other than that they seem pretty identical to me. I don't have a d40x locally to put my hands on to feel it but it it supposed to be very comparable to the d60.. and since it's much less than the d60 is much more favorable because of my budget. The d40 definitely seems like a step down compared to the d40x and d60 though.
Let me know what settings you find work best with taking pictures of the fish! Hopefully I can mimic them on the d40x. 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens... that's the lens I want to get. Is that similar to your 18-55? i know they make a few different ones.
thanks!
edit:
oh yea, how far back are you standing in the puffer shots? |

| I just haven't seen the D40x for sale anywhere. I didn't even see it on B&H... And I didn't want the D40, since the D60 seems to be much better, especially since I've talked to people about their cameras and such...
I'll let you know when I figure anything out, lol. So far I've just used the auto settings So they were actually on backorder for the 18-55mm lens, so I don't have it quite yet, I just have the 55-200mm... but that's ok, I'm probably gonna use the zoom lens alot more |

| You know why you probably didn't see it on BH? You have to search the used store for them. They don't make it any more so it's only available as used/remanufactured/refurbished etc. They are perfect working order, some never having been used.. some display models.. etc and BH has a 90 day warranty for them so if something goes wrong in the first 3 months, you can return it.
The lenses are used too but they don't lose as much value as the camera bodies do it seems. I was also looking at the:
Nikon Zoom Normal-Telephoto 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens (Vibration Reduction)
is that similar to what you are working with?
Looking over things... it doesn't look like there's a whole bunch of price difference though I am also factoring in shipping. Did you get an extra memory card as well or did it come with a sizeable one anyhow? The setup I am looking at would be $578 (that's including that 2nd 55-200 lens) prior to shipping and would not include a case. The prices almost seem identical actually. I'm gonna check out Inkleys.com and see what the price is for the camera itself... either the d40x is better than I thought it was or the prices aren't as different as I thought they were.. dpreview listed a 220$ difference in them.
edit:
ah ok.. just glancing at inkleys I see the differences. They have the kit you have on sale -$100 normal retail. That explains a lot more, I was like "wth am I missing?!" Last edited by FL CommunityFans; March 20th, 2009 at 12:42 PM.

| Ah, that makes sense.
I have a AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Image Stabilization lens
Mine didn't come with a memory card unfortunately. I have a few 2GB SDs though so I'm using those for now. |

| This is where I hit my road block... I'd love a new camera (SLR!!!) however digital ones are way to expensive (though would be the smart ones to buy) and I love the film SLR's however even they're still in the 100's |

It does a pretty good job once you figure out how to work it the best. It's around $100, probably less now. |
