| Bamboo shrimp And I am an idiot. I might shoot myself in the foot for it, but I did not quarantine this shrimp.
But I thought I would at least share the picture. Soon after introduction, said shrimp was perched beneath my filter output with fans displayed. I took a short video, which I turned into an animated gif. I am sorry if this should have been in "videos" but I wasn't sure as it was an animated gif and not an actual movie.
You might at least get a little giggle out at my expense.
I went through normal acclimation processes, and the whole time the shrimp (who still remains unnamed) was so still I thought he surely must be dying. Fast forward an hour later; so I am thinking, ok if he is that still, should be no problem picking him up with my hand and gently placing him in the tank.
Right?
Not exactly. As soon as my hand got even remotely close to the inside of the bag, he HEAVED himself in a huge leap and thankfully enough landed in my tank with a splash. At least it wasn't on the floor. I wasn't expecting that sort of reaction from him, so of course I screamed loudly. I didn't know shrimp could move that fast; but I suppose with as good as they taste, they need to.
Now of course because our introduction to each other went a bit haphazard, he so far completely creeps me out. Where in the store he seemed quite benign, I am now having visions of him creeping out of the tank at night and crawling over my face or something while I sleep.
On top of that, my eyes must not have been working right, either. In the store he looked a heck of a lot smaller than he does now. I'm kicking myself wondering how I could have possibly gotten such a huge thing for my tank!? What's wrong with me? I saw someone on this forum somewhere using the term "bamboozilla" and that is how I feel!
I am hoping our "relationship" gets better. Because right now he scares me. I'm going to start praying and making wishes on stars now that my stupidity and impatience doesn't cause me issues.
*This is my story of my introduction to bamboo shrimp. I hope it had at least a little entertainment value. |

| It is! It looks like it belongs in a science fiction movie, I swear. And I don't know what the heck is wrong with my eyes. I really must accept that I am getting old and must need glasses. |

| I know.. I'm afraid to go to bed tonight; if he lands on my face I might have a heart attack.
I should name him "gigantor" or something. Or Freddy Kreuger, because I'll surely have nightmares. |

| Hehe, I felt the exact same way about my red clawed crab. But we're getting along nicely now that I know she's in the tank to stay
Bamboo shrimps scare me though, I saw them at the store, they are so big! |

| It's going to crawl in my ears, and eat my brains I just know it.
*edit* I keep checking on the tank with a flashlight, and it's still up there perched right beneath my filter output fanning away at little things I can't see. |

| In all seriousness, I am a little sad about my shrimp. I don't think he likes it here. I haven't read about these things being more active at night, in fact I found quite the opposite. But aside from the first day he doesn't come out at all anymore until it's dark. And the only reason I know he comes out at all is because I'm so obsessive with making sure everyone in the tank is both well, and still in the tank (no roaming snail). He spends the dark evenings up on that same perch, where I can only assume he is filter feeding; because I keep my flashlight very dim through my hand so as not to disturb any of my creatures.
If he is hiding during the day because it's normal I am fine with that.. but if it's because he doesn't feel safe, then that's another story. I want my shrimp to be happy! I don't even care anymore that he's ugly, he grew on me. |

They went back to normal after I started feeding them less. I guess they didn't need to browse for food so they didn't...
I hope you figure out what your shrimp needs (if this isn't normal behaviour)! |
