I have 5 kuhli loaches, but I've never seen all five at the same time since I released them into the tank! I guess that is because there are plenty of places for them to hide.

I just love the Kuhli's there so cute I miss mine and they hid all the time except when they were playing in the bubbles

thats right, and even though like you said that substrate is not ideal, they will still bury into it, but be aware the may damage themselves on their faces, body should be ok tho with the substrate being quite smooth

Kuhlis still love gravel because goodies fall down into the rocks. I've had mine in gravel as well as sand and they didn fine.

The kuhli loach looks sweet, I used to have couple when I had a hex.
