My 10gal with divider (neons and male betta)

I discovered that my male betta's tank water was freezing cold (confession: he lived in a small tank with no filter or heater ) so I had to do something about it. He was very lethargic. My sucky LFS was out of 10 gallon dividers which makes me happy now because I didn't waste $12 on it. Instead I found the DIY way and made my own for much cheaper.

Neon tetras have been in there for a week and seem to be doing fine. Water parameters tested fine so I added my betta - he's on the right side of the tank. Unfortunately I couldn't get any good pics of him, he's kinda old and dark colored.

I like your tank. Those DIY dividers are great, aren't they? Saved me like $30.

I added a new light! It's made from an old lamp that just happens to fit over the tank after the wires between the base and the light were extended. Do you guys know of any potential problems? I turned it on and after a few minutes my betta jumped at it! or maybe splashed at it? I heard a splash and saw water on the bulbs on the betta side. =/ Dunno why it did that. Hopefully it'll be ok. I turned it off for now since it's night.

I wanted to jump into my tank all day since it's about 10 degrees warmer than my house!

Great DIY divider and the tank set up looks great! About the light set up. What type of bulb are you using? If you are using household bulbs you will have to worry about them breaking if water splashes on them while they are hot and that would not be very good.

Hm, good point. They are household bulbs and they do get hot. I'll have to see what I can do about that. Thanks for the tip!

Also, although the tank looks good I think that:
A: It is too soon for it to be cycled
and
B: You don't have enough neons, since they are schoolers, you should have more than 3

Yeah, I know.. doing 50% water changes every other day and testing the water when I do the changes. It's on its way though because I used gravel from the betta tank to start it off. ammonia readings are zero, nitrites fell, and now there's a little nitrates.

I don't think I have space for more neons.. how many more do you think I need? Would it be better/okay to add one more?

I'd say you could probably have 1-2 more neons, which would be probably enough. I think you might just have to be more careful about maintanance..

But you should wait until the tank is completely cycled if you are to add the neons..

Ok thanks for your advice. I will probably add one more when the tank is done cycling.
