New Fish Tank

Here are some pictures of my newly donated tank (landlord didn't want to move it, so they said we could have it when we moved in)... Long story short, the tank was never cared for and was in a disgusting state and I'm still in the process of trying to get it balanced out!

The tank is somewhere between 40-50 gallons and currently contains about 40 fish (pretty busy).

Anyways, here are some photos of the tank so far!

What are the measurements of the tank? You can figure out how many gallons it is,and then know how many fish you can have.Did you cycle the filter before adding all of those fish?
Looks like you are off to a good start though.

Hi Fokz, welcome to Fish Lore

That's pretty cool, a free tank!
Did it come with the fish?

Good luck.

Cool tank! The fish would really enjoy some plants (real or artificial either one) to swim/sleep/hide in. Did the fish come with the tank?

Thanks!

The tank is 45 Gallons.

All the fish were in the tank when I got it. Though it was so filthy I did not know the majority of them were even in there. Which gets to your question Randall, all the fish were already in the tank so I didn't cycle the filter....is that bad??

There were some real plants in there originally, but they were all in really bad shape and I didn't know anything about them. So I just took them all out when I did a major clean up and decided starting fresh would be easier to get it under control.

I'm on a student budget, so I have spent my available money on cleaning supplies and chemicals! I would really like to totally re-landscape it though. I might have to wait a little while though.

I would actually really like to empty the tank completely and do a major clean on it and put in new gravel and start completely from scratch. But that would require getting another tank to hold all of the fish while I do that, so that will have to wait a little while.

The number of fish could be somewhere between 30 and 40 actually. It's really tough to count the little buggers!

Hey thanks Steen!

I never knew what the Rasboras were! I'm very impressed you can pick those out of the blurry photos! There is also a little Leopard Pleco hiding in there somewhere. I had a general idea of what the rest were from my dad's old tank.

Do you happen to know what type the Algae eater is? Here is a picture of him.

He is pretty shy. I actually never knew he existed until the first time I cleaned the tank out. I lifted out his house and he popped out and scared the **** out of me. It was pretty funny (sad about the state the poor tank was in! I wish I had photos of it)

Since the most recent clean, he would never leave his house and was really shy. Now he hasn't gone back inside his house. I'm very happy to see that!

Chinese Algae Eater

As they get older, they become more and more aggressive and eat less and less algae. Watch out for it, especially around the larger-bodied fish like your angels. To quote sirdarksol from another thread:

these guys can be very unpleasant as they grow old. If you have broad-sided fish (like angels or gourami) in the tank with them, they can develop a taste for fish slime and can eventually kill your fish.

Ram_Kelly, sorry I don't have pictures of the tank before hand. I just googled messy aquariums and my tank wasn't QUITE as bad as this, but very close!!! http://newaquariuminformation.com/pi...enaquarium.jpg

Thanks for the pointers mathas, I will definitely keep a close eye on it!

What part of it doesn't look like a CAE? Everything looks right to me, down to the lack of barbels around the mouth and the opening at the upper part of the gill cover. The picture on the FishLore profile isn't the best, perhaps I should have chosen a different one.

The attached picture is the OP's fish on top, and a better CAE picture from AquaHobby's profile on bottom. It's easier to compare when the two pictures are right next to one another.

As soon as I find out what my favorite fish in the tank was...he died this morning He was kind of twitching around, almost look like he was paralyzed, then would get stuck upside down, and swim around really strange. Poor guy, I feel bad because it was probably my fault

It was kind of ironic though, like mathas said about keeping an eye on him for attacking the Angel fish... there are a couple tiny fish in the tank (not sure what they are) and they came and started to nip at the CAE and my larger Angel fish went full speed at them and scared them away! it was kind of cute.
