Yeah, the wild strain is becoming more popular in fish keeping. I know they sell them on aquabid. They are a lot more expensive.

Nope, this is a mahachi: (or at least a really bad pic of one... they go incredibly fluorescent green when displaying... as opposed to stuffing their lil faces lol)

I've bred mahachi, imbellis, pugnax and channoides. Right now I have channoides only though (plus some mysterious large wilds back home that fo rthe life of me cant figure out what they are... long story). Wilds are the best! I love my splendens, but the wilds just have that something about them... and the mouthbrooders are definitely my favourites of the wilds.

And just for fun my channoides male when he had a mouthful of eggs:

That first one is not a wild type...the rest are and none are plakats that I can see.
Here a site that some on here showed my a year ago
http://www.ibcbettas.org/smp/species/index.html

I myself have no interest in wild caught fish of any kind. I think it's cruel to take them from their natural environment just so we can have something new and different in our tanks.

But if at some point someone did not collect wild caught fish, there would not be a hobby.

I understand where you are coming from, as the fact that most marine fish in the hobby are wild caught, and in danger of being overfished, is one of the main reasons I do not do salt fish.

Oh there will always be hobby as long as people keep breeding their fish. I think there will always be wild caught available for those who want them. There has to be some limit tho...like with the zebra plecos.
For me I am not supporting any Thai breeders or wild caught sellers...not when so many neglected LFS betta are out there.

I always buy bettas from cups...I know that it's a double-edged sword. But, I feel bad & I can give them a good home.

Somebody has to. It's not like the betta at Walmart or at a lfs is much of their profit. They have lots of other things that gives much more of chunk of change than the Betta...either way betta sales don't affect them. So why not get them out of their death traps before they end up in a garbage bin or flushed.

That is not what I was saying.
If at one point, someone did not go out into the jungles and collect betta splendens, there would be no domesticated betta splendends for you to buy.

As well, 'wild' betta is mostly used to refer to a species other than splendens. Not necessarily that the fish were wild caught. My Mahachi I got from a breeder in Saskatchewan. There is actually a strong need to keep some of these species in captivity, as they often come from very specific biotopes and have extremely limited range which is quite vulnerable to habitat loss and extinction of the species. The mahachi I know for sure are thought to be quite threatened in the wild (not actually endangered, just have only been found so far in one habitat that is right in prime real estate for hotels for the tourist industry), and hobbyists may be the only way to preserve the species if that habitat is destroyed or made unsuitable for the survival of the species. If you read a bit more about the focus of the SMP it is on preserving species so they are not lost completely. http://www.ibcbettas.org/smp/Pages/complex.html "No one can save them all but everyone can at least save one" Actually a very similar philosophy to rescuing bettas in cups from stores.
Most people who have them dont' just keep them but try to breed them and spread them around to other hobbyists.
And from the fish's point of view, even those that are wild caught I think they are probably perfectly happy to be taken from an existence of fighting to survive, fleeing from predators, etc. to a safe habitat where food is plentiful, mates are available, there is nothing to be feared, and they don't go through periodic dry spells where water quality declines. All mine that were wild caught show every sign of being happy, healthy and well adjusted. They quickly lose any shyness, interact with their people, breed successfully, and sometimes quite prolifically!
And yes, the first fish shown was a domesetic plakat, not a wild.
Shawnie, your boy is a very handsome double tail plakat

You mean the purpley/yellow one? He's a domestic splendens, either a plakat or a young delta growing the fins out still.

Ahh.. probably one of the unimaculata group! Those are the kind I want to get whenever I have room for a big tank again... (ocellata are my faves) Big, feisty, 6", large mouthed bettas... what's not to love?
