Puffer tank: Work in progress

Okay, here is my tank as of now. Thanks for the really comforting and informative posts about real plants ( I'll remember for the future) but I don't have the right light and they both died. Silly me forgot to boil the driftwood, and that turned my tank orange, so I was just like:

Anyway, here it is now. Feedback please before I cycle it. Too crowded? Awkward placement of things? The water is still a little cloudy because its only been 12 hours since the sand was put in. I think the background is a bit much, too. The other side is more of a solid color so I think I'll switch it.

Well, a Dwarf puffer likes a Planted tank, and by that they don't mean one of those amazing Iwagumis, but a really, really densly planted tank, like an underwater jungle. I'd say that is a little bit of a sparse planted tank mimic... Maybe more plants?

Really? Wow. I thought I actually had too many. I had to stop myself from buying more. I guess I'll get more.

I'll get it right before he gets here.

The water has cleared up alot in the past couple of days.

I think that your tank looks really really good! I wish my tank looked as nice as yours. but I got weird neon plants in mine from Wal-mart that I thought would be cool, but they just look lame and now I'm trying to go for natural look...but I got black and white gravel so Its kinda hard to do. But really good tank! I like it alot!

Wait, I'm an awuascaper so I should be able to show you a few Planted tanks...
Well, not an Iwagumi tank, but more a Dutch aquascape.

The 2 bottom ones in the first post would be puffer heaven!

Wow. I will never be able to achieve anything that might resemble that. I feel wholly inadequet and semi disheartened.

Is there anyway that I can do something like that with fake plants?

I agree with Shawnie. I really like the way you arranged it...Maybe a few more shorter plants, but what do I know? Also, that wood-looking thing on the right is pretty sweet. Where did you get it?

The tank looks great so far. I would add some more fake plants since puffers really like to play in them and swim in and out of them. I really like the root decoration on the right. I have the same one in one of my goldfish tank

More plants it is. The 5 that I have in there, 4 of them came in a pack (Why they are all the same) and 1 I already had, so I'll try to get some different looking ones. I got the wood thing from PetSmart.

MissMTS: That root thing, on the top is open but it doesn't lead to anywhere. Does your fish every try to go in there and get stuck? I was thinking of turning it on its side or upside down.

Here are some more pictures now that the water has cleared up. I took the background off for a bit. When I went to go take those pictures, I caught my dog sitting on the rug in front of the tank and staring. I came in and he was like "Oh hi!" :P

Don't worry about them being in groups - it looks more natural if you have 5 of one kind of plant instead of 5 different kinds. Can we see pics after the extra plants where added? You never know, maybe when you are a bit more confident you can try a few easy plants like Java moss, Java fern and Crypts.

The water is looking better! If I where you I would move the tall plant at the front to the back (Hiding the filter) as tall plants at the back, medium plants in the middle and small ones at the front almost always (99 out of 100 times) looks best.

Your doing much better than I expected! This is by far the best 'Fake planted tank' attempt I have seen. Have to tried using silk plants as well? They look better than plastic, but easier than lives.

I stuck a fake plant in the top of mine so that my fishies couldn't get down inside of it. I was worried about the same thing.

I think it looks great too. I actually copied the picture to my desktop to give myself ideas as I am setting up my own tank. Some day I'll get a puffer too. They seem so cool.
