New member. New tank.

Hey all. I just set up my first tank a few weeks ago and found my way here. Great info and a lot of helpful people. Just thought I'd share a couple of pics of my setup.

Thanks.

Currently I have 7 Albino White Cloud Minnows and 3 Otocinclus. The tank is still cycling. I'm still deciding on what other fish to add.

Otos are sensitive to water conditions, they are not good fish to cycle with.Keep a close eye on all your water parameters.I would be doing 50% water changes daily if you want them to make it.Someone else might know better than me,but where did you get your plants? Not all of them look like water plants to me.Do you know what kind they are?

The Otos were not my idea. They were a suggestion from a good friend and longtime aquarist. Apparently his idea of a "hardy fish" is a little different than mine. I originally started with three, but two died. The helpful people at the store suggested I either bring the third back or buy two more and watch the water conditions VERY closely. They've been in there for about two weeks now and seem to be doing ok. My ammonia levels have started to come down, but the nitrite levels are still getting quite high. I'm doing a 50% water change daily.

The plants were all purchased at the local pet store. They're all silk and were all packaged for aquarium use. I know absolutely nothing about plants. I just bought what I liked and was on sale.

Thats good you are keeping a close eye on ammonia and nitrite levels, and that the otos are doing well.I was just wondering about the plants because I know some pet store sell live plants that are not actually underwater plants and will die in a few weeks once you get them home.I have fake plants also.I have tried live ones,I could keep them alive, but they seemed kind of messy to me.Good luck with your tank!Keep us posted with more pics!

BTW,your tank looks great, and welcome to fishlore!

Hi Nice tank, welcome to Fish Lore.

I wouldn't add anything else until your tank is finished cycling.

According to their profiles 70F is the maximum temp for white clouds and minimum for otos.
What ever fish you choose be sure to check out what temperature they can live in.

Thanks for posting the pics and good luck.

I did look into the White Clouds before I bought them. From what I understand (and at this point my knowledge is limited), since they have disappeared in the wild, all of the captive bred ones are being adapted to tolerate warmer water for tropical aquariums. The guys at the local store where I buy my fish (very knowledgeable and very helpful) assured me they would do just fine in warmer temps. (fingers crossed...but so far they seem to be healthy)

I looked into live plants, but to be honest this tank sat empty for about three years because I just didn't have the time to take care of it. I have the time now, but I really didn't want to deal with live plants. The silk ones look so nice in the tank, I'm not dissapointed a bit.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!

I know you dont want to have a live plant tank, but... ottos really really need at least one live plant to thrive. Just some hornwart or watersprite or even moss. They arent hard to keep, and your ottos will thank you.
