I get decent photos by taking pics of the whole tank with the fish not centered in the photo, then cropping the picture on the computer.

you can put the camera close to the tank for the flash. It may help but I dont take good photos. My signiture isnt so great. Works good for taking pictures of one fish for me.

With out getting to technical,use it in macro mode,without the flash.Be patient,let the fish move into the right "pose" and then click away.I have a olympus fe-230 and have gotten some good pics with it.The problem I have with posting them here is you have to re-size them which changes the resolution.Good Luck.

macro button on mine is the down button and i think it is better without flash for close up pictures.
