My Krib's are now parents!!!

I went to feed my 70 gal tonight and noticed that there was some stuff floating around in the corner where my Kribs usually hang out. Upon further inspection, and to my surprise there they were. A brood of about 30 swimming around their parents. Apparently the bred underneath a piece of driftwood. I am so excited, this is the first time I have had any of my fish breed. The only problem is that I don't know what to do now. Should I take them out of leave them in. I know that Kribs are excelent parents and take good care of their offspring. But they have lots of tankmates that would love to make meals out of the kiddos(an Angelfish, Roseline Shark, Gold Barbs, and some pretty big Black Skirt Tetras).

Anyhow, here are some pictures. I also got some pretty good digital video of them that I will post tomorrow.

Great pics! That is so exciting. I don't know that you should remove them from the tank because cichlids usually care for their young. I would double check this with someone else though, because none of my cichlids have ever bread yet.

I think they'll be alright with the parents for now. Just watch for signs of aggression to indicate a change in attitude from the parents. I've not had Kribs though and some of our members who've bred Kribs can give you more info.

Yes definitely watch the momma. My female I had turned on her male a week after the fry hatched. She tore off his whole caudal fin. Later he died suddenly...think he caught an infection from the attack.

Leave mom in there until she starts chases the babies aggressively....it was about 5-7 weeks when that happened. Sometimes both parents can remain with the fry, but I haven't experienced that.

Just a little update. Today the happy family has been swimming around the entire 70 gallon tank. There seems to be about the same number as I saw yesterday. The daddy is very protective. We have a 4" Roseline Shark that Dad just goes after as soon as he gets any closer than 6 inches away. Its a pretty funny sight, watching a 2" Krib completely OWN a fish twice his size.

I talked to my favorite LFS and they said that they have a policy that doesn't allow them to take on any fish from customers. I completely understand. They are probably the best and most well respected fish store in the San Antonio area, I could only imagine how many people they have asking to help them with unwanted fry.

So.....if there is anyone in the San Antonio, TX area the wants a few Kribs I'm your man!

bert, I was looking on the web and found a site that might help explain some of the behavior you and Allie described in Kribs.

Sounds like even though my first reaction is that the Roseline shark would be a bad companion, that in fact it is probably perfect. It distracts your kribs from fighting between themselves......Just keep a close eye out , and if your male and female start picking on each other SEPERATE them quick, before the same thing happens that happened with Allies fish!

Good Luck, & I'm looking forward to those pictures of fry!
