| My aquarium, **Updates** Hi all, I'm pretty new here and just thought I'd post a few pics of my 55 gal.
Fish Stocked:
2 Sailfin Lyretail Mollies (1 gold, 1 silver)
1 Praecox Rainbowfish
2 Boesmani Rainbowfish
1 Threadfin Rainbowfish
9 Neon Tetras
6 Zebra Danios
1 Platy (red/yellow/black)
6 guppies (3 male, 3 female, many fry, all are fancy, one male is Turquoise)
1 Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami
1 Golden Dream Killifish
Live plants include Java Moss, Lillies, Wisteria, Foxtail and a moss ball
This tank has grown over six months and started out as a 29 gal. I'm panning on getting some Blue LED night lighting and hopefully some taller plants for the back. I'm having horrible luck with my live plants, aside from the Java Moss and moss ball. This is mostly due to the Blue snail I have which I hope to get rid of soon. | It's immitation, but I just loved the way it looked too. I got it at Petsmart, nad you can't really tell in the photo, but the whole backside is concave, so it is a great hiding place for the more shy guys. Thanks for the compliments! |

| What a pretty tank! The colors are really vibrant and pleasing to the eye. Usually I don't like artificial color gravel and stuff like that but you found a way to put everything together that works really well. Master Shake as in Aqua Teen Hunger Force? I love that show! |

| Got some new fishies today! 2 marigold swords, M & F, 2 velvet wag swords, M & F, and I'm probably gonna regret it, but a BEAUTIFUL Red Turquoise Discus. I'll post pics as soon as I'm able!
The painted marigold female is SOOOO pregnant, she's gonna drop her fry within the next week or so. I love free fish! |

| I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I suggest you think twice about that discus. They require completely different water conditions, and a higher temperature than your other fish. They prefer "lazy" tank mates if any, and are best kept in a species tank. I would hate to see you waste your money because I know Discus can be pricey. Plus with all those new additions you are getting pretty close to being over-stocked.
Look on the bright side. Now you have a perfectly good reason to go out and get another tank! |

| you might consider removing the bubble wall you have for the live plants. They produce a lot of surface agitation which leads to lower CO2 levels. I had one in my tank, it looked so good it was hard to turn it off, but i figured if it meant my plants would grow better it was worth it...
Nice looking tank though, kind of surreal looking with the lighting and the different colors. It reminds me of a custom computer i saw one time |

| Vita-Chem and/or Fish Protector would be good for healing the fins on your turquoise gup. Beautiful pics. |

| bert2001 -- I researched all that stuff, too. My LFS in Lafayette, IN always has a few Discus on hand and I asked them a bunch of questions. First and foremost, I was curious as to what type of conditioning they did to their water to get the super soft water that most Discus require, and was shocked when he told me "none", just regular local area tap water, dechlorinated, of course.
The guy I spoke with was also the manager of the store and had kept Discus for over 6 years. He was full of great info as well. I told him what fish I currently had and he said all would be fine, but to watch and see how the Discus does with the Danios I have. So far, everything seems fine.
He steered me toward some better food for the Discus, including frozen bloodworms (which I've never used before) and some Tetra Cyclop-eeze MicroCrabs. He said the MicroCrabs will really help all my fish color up and the bloodworms would be especially good for the discus.
I keep my tank warmer than alot of my fish require, around 80-81 degrees Farenheit, and all my fish seem healthy (except for my poor little Turquoise guppy, but I did purchase some Melafix today and will begin treatment soon. All and all, I think things are going well for the moment.
Back to the Discus. My LFS said their supplier is a local breeder. He gets the Discus to spawn by putting them in the real soft water. Then, after the fry are big enough, he moves them to a growing tank which is a little harder. Basically, long story short, he slowly gets them into the super hard water we seem to have around here while they are juveniles.
Any one else hear of this being done or a common practice? At least with fish bred in captivity?
I appreciate all the comments and don't want to come off sounding like I'm disregarding advice, but just thought I'd share what knowledge I had gained.
If anyone is from the Lafayette, IN area, Aquarium World off Hwy. 26 is about the only place I trust when buying fish anymore. Your only other option is Petsmart, which has some nice fish, occasionally. The Petsmart staff is very knowledgeable in Lafayette, though. I haven't talk to anyone in the fish department that hasn't had at least 3 tanks and 10+ years of experience with fish.
Enough babbling...Please keep the comments coming. Once I get a good pic of my new fish, I'll post them here.
Thanks everyone!!! |

| OK, so I'm beginning to think I might have gotten a little carried away here, which is easy to do. Would any of you say I have to many fish for that tank, cause I'm all paranoid now that my fish are uncomfortable!!!
My girlfriends son has also gotten into aquariums and I promised to give him my old 29 gal. and if you guys think I should get rid of some of my fish, he may be getting a few free fish. Let me know what you all think or if you think I'll be fine as I am. Again, here's the list of what I have stocked:
1x Red Turquoise Discus
6x Zebra Danios (I've already decided to get rid of these b/c of the Discus)
1x Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami
6x Asst. Fancy Guppies
2x Lyretail Mollies
1x Platty
4x Swords
2x Boesmani Rainbows
1x Praecox Rainbow
1x Threadfin Rainbow
5x Neon Tetras
1x L018 Pleco
So, if I were to get rid of the Danios and Neons, would that be more acceptable? All opinions welcome. I will be getting a 10 gal. in return for the 29 gal, but I have no room to set it up. |

| HA! My Marigold Sword has started dropping her fry!!!!!! I came hope from classes today to find her being really lethargic and just kind of floating near the top of the tank. Today is my water change day, so before I started, I gently scooped her into my breeding cage so as not to overly stress her while I did my cleaning. By the time I was done, there was one little tiny guy/girl floating on the bottom of the breeder!!!! Hope there are more on the way!! |

| Shake; (awesome name BTW) if I were you and had an empty 29 gallon waiting around, I would move all the live-bearers (guppies, mollies, platys, and swords) there and leave the rest in your big tank. This would make for a beautiful and colorful live-bearer tank, and an awesome rainbow/discus tank. |

| bert2001 -- I totally agree...I just wish I had the room to do it. Being a college student still living at home (I live very close to Purdue...why waste money...) I just don't have the room to Have both the 55 and 29 up at the same time. However, I'm planning some rearranging soon, and it may be possible.
I would LOVE!!!! to have 1 or even 2 more Discus. I've always wanted a pigeon blood or blue diamond. I may have to find a way to make this work because it is getting me all pumped up to have an even more beautiful tank!!!!!
As for an update on the sword fry. After dropping more than 40 fry, including a couple that looked albino?!?! and at least one that had a siameese(sp?) twin, I released mama sword back into the tank. I was away from the tank for a couple hours and when I returned, she was dead. Of the 40 fry, it seems that only about 6 or 7 are still alive. We will have to see what happens in the coming days. |
