Hi Jack,
you can use your feeder fish to cycle your tank if you want. What kind of fish do you have? Are they goldfish? If so, you dont want to keep the water temp too high for them. If its not goldfish and some other fish, then all you have to do is feed them and check the water perimeter often and do your partial water changes as needed til it cycles.
good luck with your cycling...

There definantly not goldfish, they are grey/bronze/black and about an inch and a half long, how often would you recommend partial water changes considering they have built up a reasonable amount of waste in the 12 hours i have had them. Also thanks for the advice on what i should stock in my tank Kate, i am taken by the dwarf gourami and now considering what to get for a second fish, would the sailfin you suggested work with the gourami? Finally i agree that Nevilles tank appears to be overcrowded (no offence neville) and im wondering what you thought of having a red tailed shark or a rainbow shark in there as the second larger fish, having looked on fishlore it says that a 10g is the minmum for the red tailed howver ive heard that the rainbow is less aggresive. any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hey Jack...
how is the tank stocking going? Did you end up going with the dwarf gourami or the red tail shark?

i havent stocked it yet, its still cycling ill probably put the first few fish apart from the feeder fish in a couple of weeks when i get back from holiday, im thinking about the dwarf gourami and a some neon rainbow fish and maybe some ghost shrimp aslong as they wouldnt become fish food (i posted a thread on this but havent gotten any responses yet.)

water changes
great!
right now, you have feeder fish in there, right? i take it you want them to survive the cycling? If so, I'd do a partial water change every day or 2 until you have your testing kit, then test daily and do partial water changes when any of the levels get too high.

Good luck with that...sounds like they would do ok together. I saw your post on the question of ghost shrimp, but I have never had them so cannot comment on them for you. But others here do have them and may come on board to give you a hand with that question
