His fins are a bit shabby, I know nothing about bettas, will they get better?
you might try putting liquid vitamins in his tank daily.. like VitaChem or another kind if you can find it locally or order it from the DFS website.. they help with fin health. if he has finrot, you'd want to treat him with trisulfa and if you could get another picture showing his fins more and post it in the Betta forum, there's a lot of Betta owners that could tell you about how he's doing and if he needs treated, how to treat him.
hes not much of a showman and doesnt like the camera, is that photo not clear enough?
it's clear, he's just not showing his fins a lot.. i can't say for sure if he has finrot, but if you're concerned that he might a good course of action might be liquid vitamins and a product called rid-fungus. These are both safe to use even if he doesn't have finrot but might help some if he does.
he doesnt show his fins, they just droop. as ive never owned a betta i wouldnt know their behaviour.
he seems happy, swims around most of the time, but isnt eating yet (been 2 days), are they fussy with
new food or something? garb food but spit it back out.
he could still be stressed from the change. There's a few foods that bettas tend to respond to more than others:
1) a frozen pea. thaw it for about 50 sec. in the microwave, peel it and tear off the smallest pieces you can to feed him 3 or 4 am & pm like pellets.
2) bloodworms. freeze dried will do, but they like the frozen ones better and aren't as likely to get constipated from them. thaw in a bowl of room temp. tank water and feed 2 or 3 am & pm.
3) daphnia. Hikari freeze-dried daphnia is what we use. it's really light and gentle on a betta and they like to nibble on it.
it's normal for a betta to not eat for a little bit after a big change, so you could try those foods on him, watch for any signs of trouble and see how he does at relaxing into his new home.
I put a heater in and holly s**t what a difference, hes perked up swimming around
and showing off his fins, eating a little better, gave him some blood worms.
his fins even look like theve got more blue in them now.
Yesterday his fins had flashes of blue, now there almost all blue with flashes of red. was red his 'ed off' colour,
and is blue his 'happy colour'? Hes 3 months old i just found out.
Wow, that was a fast color change. Usually it takes a few weeks for them to completely change color like that. The change in temp probably did it. Make sure you keep his tank at 78-80 F.
yea, 0morrokh is right on. i've seen a lot of ours go thru color changes after being brought home from the pet store.. the pet store water is usually 71 or 72F and they aren't generally too happy. so the change to warm water and a tank with some room to swim can inspire the color change.
Im not an expert on bettas, but have three and one Ive had for almost 5 months now. But I dont see any fin rot on your guy. He actually looks pretty good to me!
My girlfriend got home last night and looked in the tank and said "wheres cocaine?",
the colour change is amazing, and hes a totally different fish with the heater, eating
well and flaring up at anything near his tank. I always knew bettas had character
and im stoked i got him.
building a bubble nest is a sign of a happy betta but a lot of them don't and are still happy. it's just up to the bettas. our first betta was a big bubble nester, but the 4 male splendens that we have now don't bubble nest.
Yup, many happy Bettas never bother to blow a bubblenest...and then again, I've seen perfectly miserable Bettas in tiny, dirty cups at petstores who blow bubblenests (although this isn't common at all). I have found that a lot of it also depends on how much surface agitation there is...if there's too much current the bubbles won't hold together, so the Betta doesn't bother trying to make a nest.
