Compatability

Do Neon Tetras and Colombian (red/blue) Tetras get along?

I read that colombians, "are a somewhat larger tetra than can be semi-aggressive with smaller tank mates."

Seeing as how they are larger than neons I decided I should ask.

Hello Ilikefish. Above is a link you may find helpful. I don't have personal experience with this type of fish. Hope it helps!

I was looking at Columbian Tetras also....but they get largish.. As the link aquarist48 gave you....if ya notice most of the keepers have them in very large tanks. If you get 6 for your 30 gal....space may get a bit tight and you would probably see some agression and nipping going on. Look at the section of Cyprinids (Rasboras) on aquabid...some really nice, small species and good schooling fish too.

I have (had) both Colombians and Neons in a 30 gallon tank. I had a school of 8 Colombians and 11 Neons. After the great heater meltdown I now have only 3 Colombians and 1 Neon left...I haven't decided what to do with them as I'm not sure I want to replenish the schools.

In the larger schools they were fine together but the Colombians hid a lot. Now in the nonschooling numbers all 4 are out and about swimming together. I have noticed a little fin nipping between the two biggest Colombians but they leave the neon alone entirely.

I think you could keep them together in a 30g especially if it is planted to give hiding room in case nipping becomes a problem. Again my Colombians never chased or nipped at my Neons even when they dropped below schooling numbers.

I hope this helps!

I have personally had Columbian tetras with much smaller fish, and I have not had any problem what-so-ever with aggression, so I'm quite happy with that result.
