my daughter just found a pleco in the middle of the living room floor no idea how long its been there. all the tank lids were closed this morning. i must have staggered half asleep PAST it to turn the tank lights on too! i thought he was dead but put him in the water and he started swimming. he is all covered in fluff and cat hair and CRUMBS. UUGH.
i hope he recovers. i wonder how long he was out?

Oh there is no telling how long he was out. I have no clue how they get out but they can do it that is for sure. Glad you didn't step on him. LOL on the fluff, cat hair, and crumbs...it would be dog hair here. He will probably be fine but it probably will not teach him not to jump out!!!

Check the cat. I bet she/he put it down after feeling those fins.

I did not mean that bad about the cat hair in his mouth...LOL it just made me think of when my son was about 2 he bit the cat and we had to wash all the cat hair out of his mouth. So of course I pictured your pleco with a mouthful of cat hair.

One of my friends is a school teacher. She had a pleco in her fish tank at school and it had a glass lid on. Her pleco got out somehow over the weekend. When she got to her classroom on Monday morning, the pleco was all the way across the room from the tank. Unfortunately, it was dead, but it sure traveled a long distance around desks/chairs/tables to get up behind her teacher desk at the opposite side of the room from the tank. She never did figure out how it got out other than pushing it's way out from under the lid.

I know it's not supposed to be funny, but I did actually start laughing when I started reading this thread.
I hope the pleco is doing okay! Fish do some odd things sometimes....

Plecos can breathe out of water for short periods of time as long as they don't dry out. I'm glad he is doing well. Maybe he will stay in the tank now?

WOW that is amazing. I read the other day that because Betta's are labyrinth breathers that if they jump out of the water and look like they are dried up that you should put them back in the water and sometimes they will be revived. Don't know haven't had to try it yet.
