i dont think plecos will actually uproot plants, but they might try to eat them. do you have any idea what kind of plants you'd like? how much are you looking to spend on lighting, ferts, that sort of thing? you can keep it pretty simple and just have plants like java fern, java moss, anubias, and anacharis which are all pretty hardy low light plants, or you could have plants that require more lighting, possibly CO2 injections, etc.

My plecos have never touched my plants, but what kind of cichlids do you have? There are lots of cichlids that will munch on plants. How many WPG do you have in your tank? That will dictate what kind of plants you are able to keep.

a 29g with a pleco? is the pleco a common plecostomus? bit small for a pleco if it is and cichlids really should have a bit more than 29g.

Some plecos might eat plants, but mostly people report them uprooting plants when it's a big pleco moving fast. They are very powerful but not very agile. They just knock them right out of the substrate. Hope to hear from you soon on your livestock list

A common pleco will uproot your plants. My swords were safe but stem plants don't stand a chance with a large pleco. You will need to find him a new home at some point though anyway because he will get way too pig for a 29 gallon tank. My advice would be to get rid of him and then get plants. I had a common pleco in my 75 but got rid of him when he got to be 9 or 10 inches in under a year. My plants were constantly floating. It got to be very frustrating. I now have a BN pleco and he doesn't uproot the plants.

most plecs will snack on plants ...just use some veggies like zucchini or cucumbers to try to get them to leave it be...a common plec will outgrow all those tanks..and it will be hard to keep the water parimeters in check with his huge bio load...maybe trade him in for a bn plec or something smaller?
