Tank Mates???

Hello I am new to this so I will try to word this as best I can. I have a 10 Gallon fresh water fish tank. Right now I have a Reeves Turtle (Baby) with a basking rock and sponge. I also keep the tank at around 80 degrees with a submerged heater, and as far as the filter is concerned I got it from a friend so I am not sure on what kind it is. I was looking into adding some color to the tank and was wondering if these fish would go together as well as not have the tank to crowded.

Reeves Turtle 6" max
red tail shark 6" max
betta Fish 3" max
and a Sword tail 4" max I believe. Any input would be very appreciated

I wouldn't keep fish with a turtle. I've read about some trials in big tanks but I don't think the fish will make it.

I am not 100% sure but I think turtles are usually kept as species only (no tankmates).

I originally had a redtail in the tank previously but unfortunately it was a bad fish and didn't make it... but it was in the tank for about a half hour and they seemed to be fine.

I wish those keeping turtles show up and clarify this for us.

I'm not familiar with turtles but I can talk about the Red Tail Shark and the Betta.
Red Tail sharks are very active territorial fish and in order for them to be happy they require a tank at least 36" long.
Betta's are very poor community fish since they're long fins slow them down (turtle chow) and other fish really like to pick on them.

Now I've never had turtles but from what I understand they are very messy so over filtration is a must. Usually the only fish you'll see in with turtles are feeder fish.

EDIT: I did a bit of Googleing and found this site. Id suggest as a stocking senario that you over filter as much as you can. Look for fast agile fish. And try to give the turtle at least 10 gals of the total tank volume to himself... though ideally should probably count a bit higher around 20 due to waste and the lowered water level not holding the full tank vol.

Hope that helps.

fish are a natural part of the diet of your turtle. so any fish you put in with it most likely will end up as turtle food in a small tank the fish won't be able to get away from the turtle.
as a general rule turtles should be kept with only turtles some like the one I have should be kept alone.
if you want to keep some fish with it I recommend some larger feeder fish

Yeah, I think your better off without on this one. If you want some color, maybe you could get some plants or decorations.
And I'm just throwing this out there, please keep in mind I have no knowledge of turtles. are they like hermit crabs in the way that you can paint there shells? Can you even paint hermit crab shells? Because I know when I was younger I wanted a hermit crab so that I could choose the design on the shell.

thank you, you have all been very helpful and I myself have also done some research. It appears that in a much larger tank (i.e. 40+ gal) this would be okay give the turtle has 10gal to himself for every inch, so if he is 3 inches he needs 30 gallons. I am most likely going to end up getting plants and stuff to add some color until I can afford a much larger tank. Thanks again for all the help
