Oscar vs. Dempsy?

I have repeatedly heard about Oscars being one of the most responsive, expressive fish in the buisiness. How do Dempsy's compare. I am going to get one for a 55 gallon tank after it cycles but I am going to decide between the two. Any ideas?

I'd get an oscar. I just think they're prettier! Neither are a community fish. Dempsey's also get very aggresive.

No I'm definetly keeping them in a community tank. Just either the Dempsy or the Oscar and 1 pleco is the plan for now! Thanks, more responses would be appreciated.

I believe the oscars are more pet like. However I like Jack's alot better and I think they are nicer looking. Both are full of character.

Oh, and another note, Oscar's get bigger than Dempsey's.

Oscars reach 13 in, while JD's reach 8 in. I'd go with a JD if you plan on having a pleco also.

I think that a JD would do better than an oscar in a 55 gallon. I would ask Shawnie. She has kept both for a long time and would have some great insight for you. Both are great fish

As a Dempsey owner, i vote for the Dempsey.....Had mine for 3 years now and he has plenty of personality and has done well with other fish in a 55, a female 4 inch convict, a 3 inch silver dollar and a common pleco......Believe it or not, he is about 10 inches and getting a set of shoulders on him.....Dont get me wrong, i think oscars are awesome fish and have great personalities, but the extra messiness, and not being real plant friendly, just makes me lean towards the Dempsey

I love Oscars but in a 55gal I'd go for a Dempsey, as they don't grow as large, and will do better in a 55.
