Mystery Cichlid Death

less then 1 day after putting him in my 4 inch convict died. My ammonia readings are at about 4 but everything esle is good. I heard that these guys were super hardy though and thats why I got them. I moved the other one into an already cycled tank until my big one finishes. Any ideas on the mystery death?

I'm really sorry about your fish. It's so sad to lose a fin baby.
An ammonia reading of 4 is extremely toxic.
Are there any other fish in the tank?

I'm glad you moved the others, now you can finish up this tank fish less.
Do you have nitrite or nitrate readings?

The only way to tell how far you are in the cycle is to test the water.

I've never had it. I'm pretty sure people have said a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Not sure though.

Hi Pestonoodle..
Sorry to hear your convict died..Just incase you didn't know..Ammonia is very toxic to fish in any amount..If you have a reading for ammonia that means your tank isn't cycled and you should be doing 50% water changes. That's the only way to keep your fish from being poisoned if your cycling with fish...So like Lucy said Since you moved all your fish I would go ahead and do a fishless cycle my adding ammonia to the tank untill your reading for ammonia are 0 nitrite 0 and some nitrate 12 hours after adding the ammonia..Good luck, and again I'm sorry about your convict.
