I am looking for a small fish that will do well with a gourami in a 8 gallon tank without any others of its own species (unless they are REALLY small- like 1.5 inches) Thanks!

How about a couple of Corys, or a couple of male Guppies? What kind of Gourami is it?

You should be able to add a couple of small fish then.

imo in an 8 gal, the gourami should be the only fish .....you would be pushing his patience by adding others without enough area for him to call his own
