walmart glofish

Hi ya'll!

So, we live pretty far away from a real pet store. (about 2 hours). There is a walmart 45 mins away, and I went there to get a quarantine tank. we don't buy our fish there, because they always looks really sad and sick, and we don't want to support that.

but.... we were tempted the other day when we saw some pretty awesome/toxic looking fish there called glofish. they looked like zebra danios but radioactive. I was reading some other threads and info about the glowfish on fishlore, and can't figure out if its cool (ethically) to create and own them. they seem so... unatural and mutated. yet im totally attracted. what do you think?

It's a personal opinion thing.
Some people feel that it's unnatural and wrong to create them, others are fine with it.

You've got to make the determination for yourself.
They are indeed danios, but have had invertebrate DNA injected into their cells at conception, causing them to have their brilliant colors.

has injected DNA shown any side effects? is this just like seedless watermelons?

It doesn't seem to have any side effects (though who knows what we can't see).

The concern most people would have is more either on a religious note, a concern for the critters injured before a "successful" method is found, or fear of where this science will lead.

These fish really do fade out in the the presence of toxins, I found this out when i added medication to treat ICH. I found that they don't live as well as an unmutated danio, seems as if i was buying / replacing one every few weeks, so i finally just let them dwindle away.I myself , i'm fine with using them as pollution/toxin detectors.
