What would be good?

Hi I am setting up a tank for my 4 year old sister for her 5th birthday. It will probably be 5 or 10 gallons and I am not sure what I should put in it. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

You could put any ONE of the following options, but this is by no means all of your options:

1 betta -or-
2 female + 1 male guppy -or-
2 female + 1 male molly -or-
12 cherry shrimp (they will reproduce insanely, but reproduction can be controlled by amount of food given) -or-
1 african dwarf frog -or-
cardinia yellow shrimp -or-
neon green shrimp -or-
2 females 1 male endler's livebearer (they will reproduce, but again, food control and parents will eat offspring, so that controls it also.) -or- Many many other options.

You're doing great by asking rather than overstocking and then asking how to fix it.

Good job!

She might like something colorful like male guppies, male endlers or male platys. As many as can fit under the "1 gallon per adult inch" guideline.

As Dave said, if you did all male guppies, endlers, platys, mollies you wouldn't have to contend with fry. (Sorry, forgot to put that in original post, Thnx for the catch, Dave. )

Thanx, I'd love to say I made that catch, but I just was thinking of color appeal. I posted without reading the whole thread. I like your suggestions too and especially a Betta, which would love the attention from it's little owner.

A betta would love all that space,
and he'd love to have that little girl giving him all that love and attention.
Plus, they get to know you after a while, so maybe she'd like that..?

I'm a bit biased though... as i love the bettas!

I vote for betta, too! They're great and have a ton of personality!
