My pets all go by a name pattern...for my fish, Otos start with "M", Playt's start with "Sun", Guppies are parts or features of a star, Bettas get Spanish names, and so on...
I just look at the fish and think of what the coloration reminds me of...not just whether he's red or blue, but what little patterns or differences I see.
