Black Ghost Knife

I was just reading through another post and it prompted me to ask if ghost knifes sting other fish at any age because I allways thought they didn't do that until they were mature, I'm just curious because I have one in my discus tank.I hope it isn't stinging my fish allready.

Re: Black Ghost Knife

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_ghost_knife_fish this will explain your question.

Basically a black ghost knife is a "weakly electric fish, they generate a discharge that is typically less than one volt in amplitude. These are too weak to stun prey, but are used for navigation, object detection (electrolocation) and communication with other electric fish (electrocommunication)."

Re: Black Ghost Knife

if a fish nibbles on a ghost knife's tail it will get a electric shock, not a bad one but depending on the size of the fish on how it handles the shock

I don't think they could harm your discus, they just use a very weak electrical current to find food considering that they're blind. But BGKs don't sting and are not venomous. In fact I own a 4" BGK and he is in with a 6.5" needle nose gar, a 6" senegal bichir, a 4.5" blue jack dempsey, and a 3" red tailed shark.

Hope that answers your question
